Modern vs Contemporary: the difference

Contemporary living room: grey walls, slate seating, and one warm accent

Modern and Contemporary get used as the same word. On this site, Modern Minimalist is the empty room. Contemporary is the clean room with one current accent.

Modern Minimalist uses pale grey-white walls, a light floor, a low grey sofa, black metal, and almost nothing on the tables. One muted canvas is the art. Open floor is the point.

Contemporary uses cool grey walls, slate-blue upholstery, glass and metal, and one burnt-orange note. A large geometric artwork is normal. The room is current, not historic, and it can change when the accent color changes.

If you remove the orange and the glass tables and the room still looks finished, you wanted Minimalist. If the room looks unfinished without that one warm hit, you wanted Contemporary.
