Mid-Century Modern: what to buy, what to skip

Mid-Century Modern is warm wood, tapered legs, and one saturated color. Buy the leg shape and the wood before you buy the orange sofa.
Worth buying: a sofa or chairs with tapered wooden legs, a low teak or walnut table, a wool rug with a simple geometric, and one teal or mustard ceramic. A brass lamp with a sculptural stem fits. Cream walls and a walnut floor keep the color from shouting.
Skip matching bedroom sets, carved dark mahogany, nailhead trim, and glossy black lacquer. Those belong to Traditional or Hollywood Regency. Also skip a room that is only grey glass and one burnt-orange pillow. That is Contemporary, which uses metal and glass more than teak.
One vintage piece is enough. If every item is a replica from the same year, the room looks like a showroom. Mix one older wood form with plain new upholstery.
